Language Games

Language Games by Brandon LaBelle, Amsterdam 2008
Staged as a generative drama with three bodies, a pair of headphones, CDs, some writing and a song, the work is a situational unfolding of errant narratives. You go that way, and I’ll go this way, and then we’ll meet on the other side, ok? Mishearing, misunderstanding, and misrepresenting appear as characters whose interactions produce a chain of associations, with sound as the main protagonist.

Visitors are invited to bring their     favorite CDs, played and listened to through headphones by two performers. One responds by writing words on an overhead projector, the other by speaking and singing, humming, voicing what they are hearing. The third performer sits at a computer, watching what the first is writing, and tries to compose a narrative in response. Each action forms a network extending from the audiences, creating a constellation of meanings.
