Kathy High (USA) is an interdisciplinary artist, educator working in the areas of technology, science and art. She was trained in film and video at Buffalo University studying with media pioneers Hollis Frampton, Steina Vasulka and Tony Conrad. She produces videos, performances and installations about gender and technology, empathy, animal sentience. She is also a scholar of the history of video technologies, systems and video art. In the last ten years she has become interested in working with living systems, animals and art, considering the social, political and ethical dilemmas of biotechnology and surrounding industries. She has received awards including fellowships from Guggenheim Memorial Foundation (2010), Rockefeller Foundation, and National Endowment for the Arts – and has had artist residencies with SymbioticA at the University of Western Australia (2009-10), and in Hong Kong with the Asian Arts Council (2005). Her art works, have been shown in film festivals, galleries and museums nationally and abroad, including the Guggenheim Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Lincoln Center and Exit Art (NYC), the Science Gallery, (Dublin), NGBK, (Berlin), MASS MoCA (North Adams), Videotage Art Space and Para-Site Gallery (Hong Kong), among others. Her co-edited book The Emergence of Video Processing Tools: Television Becoming Unglued (with Sherry Miller Hocking, and Mona Jimenez) on the history of video imaging tools and systems was recently published by Intellect Books (UK) 2014. High is Professor in the Department of Arts, at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY - a department specializing in integrated electronic arts practices.
