Thousands upon thousands of soldier birds
ferry to the beat of wings
a murmuration
at the edge of your sleep

You watch them spiral
in unison the starlings turn
wheeling beyond the moon
that scrapes your window

Pamela Hart

Pamela Hart is writer in residence at the Katonah Museum of Art. She received a creative writing fellowship from the NEA in 2013 to complete a manuscript on the experience of military families after multiple years at war. She’s poetry editor and mentor for the Afghan Women’s Writing Project. Her chapbook from Toadlily Press is The End of the Body. Her manuscript Mothers Over Nangarhar was a finalist in the Little A Amazon Poetry Contest. Her poem, “On the Orange Jumpsuit,” was a finalist in the 2015 Auburn Witness Poetry Prize honoring Jake Adam York and published by Southern Humanities Review. Her son, an Army Ranger, deployed to Afghanistan as part of the 10th Mountain Division.
