POEMS

from Key Bridge( 31.i.2002)

The view that the world's contained
in a line, that each string is a series
of worlds held together by a force like light,
that each object is a fractal with itself repeated
over and over and over like distance—

The view that the river will
carry everything before time's end,
that there's no river at all even,
that river is not a noun,
a verb like smoke/land/place—

The view that metaphor can make anything anything,
that metaphor can
                         (open it, the metaphor can
                         close it, the metaphor can
                         open it, the metaphor can
                          ——

The view that you get from the river
of Georgetown buildings climbing feet on heads
from the bank up the hill to the National Cathedral's sandstone peaks—
