Gwyneth Lewis
has published six books of poetry in Welsh and English. Her first
collection in English, Parables & Faxes (Bloodaxe, 1995) won the Aldeburgh
Poetry Festival Prize and was shortlisted for the Forward, as was
her second, Zero Gravity (Bloodaxe, 1998). Y Llofrudd Iaith ('The
Language Murderer', Barddas, 2000), won the Welsh Arts Council Book
of the Year Prize. Gwyneth's words are on the front of the new Wales
Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay in six-foot high letter-shaped windows.
In the 1980s she was a Harkness Fellow and studied at the Graduate
Writing Division of Columbia University, New York. Gwyneth is a Fellow
of the Royal Society of Literature, a member of Academi and a Nesta
(National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) Awardee.
Her first prose book was Sunbathing in the Rain: A Cheerful Book on
Depression (Flamingo 2002), which was shortlisted for the Mind Book
of the Year. Gwyneth was recently named as one of the Poetry Book
Society's Next Generation of poets. Two in a Boat: A Marital Voyage,
an account of sailing from Wales to North Africa, will be published
by Fourth Estate in May 2005.
