This is Nothing that is Written Down

All night the trees
swing in the wind
in a wildness
we cannot have.
I go to sleep
eluding the threats
of a delicate science.
In the pale gold of morning,
I walk past the stagnant pond,
fold back inside,
remembering
how, as a child
I'd been sure
I could learn the animals' language.
