Artist’s Statement

After making a few memorable collages in the mid-60s, I began doing them again in about 2002. The group put forth here is like a set of notational journal entries consisting of images and words rather than words alone. In fact, they were originally composed in a journal. They have been helped in their web presentation by Phillip Barron, National Humanities Center, with many thanks for his assistance. Another group, published 2009 in Jacket 37, is called “Draft 94: Mail Art” and is one “canto” of my long poem, Drafts. I do all this to engage in poesis: the enormous pleasure of making. This kind of making involves vision, materials, comment, and choices. These works in general are like messages sent from another zone of the artistic practices in which I am engaged. —4 Jan 2009
