Rahman Rahi was born in Srinagar (Jammu & Kashmir) in 1925. He studied Persian and English Literature at Kashmir University, where he later became Professor of Kashmiri. He has published two collections of poems and two books of literary criticism. Rahi has received the Sahitya Academy and Padma Shri national awards.
