Mahmud Farani was born in 1938 and like many of his predeceassors and colleagues, was imprisoned by the Khalq Party in Afghanistan. He eventually escaped from prison and joined with Mujahadeen forces. He later served as advisor for cultural affairs for the Mujahadeen government in the early 1990s.
